Reccomendations?

I've never watched any real anime, just stuff like dragonball and samurai pizza cats when i was younger but now I want to see what its all about. One of my friends is telling me to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion but I don't want to spend a few days downloading it and end up dissapointed. What would you reccomend I see?

I also liked Noir, though it's a little bit older. It's still a great anime to me.
Hmm Serial Experiments Lain was a popular one.
Naruto is still popular. Samurai Champloon also.

and in a month or 2 naruto should get better as well (damn fillers)

bleach powens all animes if you wanna start to watch anime and then bleach is the one

I suppose ill name a few. Since i dont know what your into. Ill try and add some variety.

Texhnolyze, Hellsing, Noir, Gantz, Blue Submarine No 6, Tenjho Tenge, DearS(its ok similer to Chobits but the mangas own the anime though), Armitage, Appleseed, Ai Yori Aoshi, Dual, Gungrave, Haibane-Renmei , Gad Gaurd, Last Exile , Lain, Najica Blitz Tactics. Just a few since i dont know what your into. I pretty much like it all.
