what do i look for when purchasing a new HD i dont need one bigger than 650 GB, kinda limited on money soo around how much would a good cheap HD cost?

Most important factors are RPM and Cache. 7200 RPM and 32 MB Cache is standard. I recently purchased a 1 TB Western Digital Blue Caviar drive with those specs for about $60. In my opinion Western Digital is the most reliable brand. A 500 GB one is about 40 bucks.

Yes. Depending on your motherboard, you may need an HDD with a transfer rate of 6 gb/s. Newer mother boards support models of 6 gb/s transfer rate, however it should not matter much seeing as the mother board limits the transfer rate so:

A 6gb/s HDD will work with a 3gb/s Mother Board(Transfer rate will be 3gb/s) and it will also work with a 6gb/s Mother Board(Transfer rate will be 6gb/s).

A 3gb/s HDD will work with a 6gb/s(Transfer rate will be 3gb/s) mother board and a 3gb/s mother board.

Just buy one that is 6gb/s.

Never know if you're going to upgrade motherboards That is why mine is 6 GB, even though I only have 3gb ports. I read on a hardware forum though that the industry is slowly starting to move over to 6gb/s.

With his case he probably isnt going to upgrade mobo until (if) he gets a new CPU.
But I heard that it will be around two years for the 3gb/s to be removed.. lol
and by then you can probably get 1-2 tb hdd's for 40$ loool

get a new hard drive
install an OS on it
problem solved
then stick your old drive back in to see if it will detect then, if it still doesnt, throw it away
if it does detect, get important files off it as fast as possible
