Okay, could you try reinstalling? Make sure you use the crossfire official downloader. Don't use those mirror sites because they can be outdated versions.

Also when you do uninstall, delete the remains of the Z8Games folder in C:\Program Files\Z8Games

Turn off that "avastui.exe." on your task manager.

Just right click on it and go to terminate, then if a message comes just it.
Then try again.

To a date where this never started happening.

Well one conflict/problem I could see from XP to 7 is that, your computer might have had some conflict when upgrading.

Before you installed 7, did you run one of those scans where it can determine if you can install Windows 7 or not?

This is one hard problem to solve.
Did you run every Windows Update? Made sure your Windows is fully up to date. You recently did update to 7, so there might be some rust left behind.

Also did you run the system restore idea I had laid out?
