    US Government Censors 70 Websites
posted by Thom Holwerda on Sat 31st December 2011 10:46 UTC
The US is really ramping up its war on intellectual property infringement, a war which I'm sure will be just as successful, cheap and supported by the people as the wars on drugs and terrorism. The US has started seizing the domain names of various websites through ICANN - not because owners of these sites were convicted of anything, but merely because complaints have been filed against them. Anyone want to take a guess how long it will be before the US government blocks WikiLeaks? Update: The blocks function outside of the US too. In other words, the US is forcing its views upon the rest of the world once again.
The current seizures of domains did not even use the proposed bill which recently passed the US Senate Judiciary Committee. The seizures come from the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, and cover about 70 websites relating to potential copyright infringement and counterfeit goods, among which is Torrent-Finder.com, a mere torrent search engine which does not host or even link to torrents; it displays content hosted elsewhere through embedded iframes.

"My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!” the owner of Torrent-Finder explained TorrentFreak, “I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN."

This is equivalent to having your house seized for pointing out to someone you can buy weed in the college district. The craziness goes even further - ordinary search engines are really effective at finding unauthorised copyrighted content as well. You can use Google to find the latest Parenthood episode in 720p, and Bing, too, is pretty good at it. Why aren't we seeing notices for these domains as well?

Body scanners, sexual assault patdowns, censorship laws, seizure of property without even a notice (let alone a court order or conviction), even without doing or having done anything illegal. Welcome to the police state. It won't be long now until the US government - and other government will surely follow - will start blocking websites that do not fall within the government's favour. I'm sure WikiLeaks is being put on censorship lists as we speak.

And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.

A war is brewing. If you think body scanners, sexual assault patdowns, censorship laws, and the seizure of property without even a notice are the end, you're sadly mistaken.

    It's only the beginning.

TPB to be blocked in NL - how to fix
Today, a dutch court ordered the two ISPs Xs4all and Ziggo to start blocking access to this site.

Of course this is nothing new. It happens all the time that people try to shut down TPB. But mostly it's in countries like China and North Korea.

As a user you can easily circumvent the censorship using TOR or getting a VPN account from someone you trust.

The court has ordered that all future IPs and domain names for TPB must be blocked. So let's make this fun! If you have your own hosting somewhere, you can install a CGI Proxy. It's a software that lets your users visit your website and access TPB as if they did it directly. If you host it, you will be censored yourself. If you have other things on your domain or your IP, the court has effectively censored your freedom of speech. With even more stupid laws like SOPA coming up, it's time we teach the courts what the internet is really about!

If you host your own CGI proxy and point it to TPB, please link it below in the comments so that the ISPs can censor you.

TPB censored, again and again and again...
Today we learned that we're being blocked - again! Yawn. When will they give up - we're still growing despite (or perhaps because) all their efforts.

So, if you live in Belgium (or maybe work at the European Union Parliament, we have thousands of visits from them every day) you should change your DNS in order to circumvent the blockage. You should do this anyhow - never trust your ISP.

There are some options! One is Googles DNS system. It is fast but run by an american company. Using this one is fun, because it probably makes Google semi-responsible for you accessing TPB in the future according to what we understand from this strange Belgian ruling! Click here to read how to do this.

You can also use OpenDNS, which is another great option! Click here for information on how to change DNS on your computer to OpenDNS, and here for info on how to change on your router.

And if you're tired of your ISP playing tricks on you, you can always just get a VPN. We're running our own VPN system and we never back down for idiocracy. This also lets you access the full internet freely where ever you are…

    You're doing it wrong.

SOPA still needs to go into the voting process in Congress, as well as the sister bill known as Protect IP act (PIPA)
Even if both were to be passed through the Senate it needs to pass through the hands of the president and be signed as a law.

That doesn't mean a whole lot to me tbh..

Funny how the media is doing a great job keeping such an important bill from the public eye.

"A few Web sites have set the blackout date as January 18, when Issa, who has championed an alternative called the OPEN Act, will be holding a hearing where some of SOPA's critics are scheduled to testify."

SOPA won't get passed, that much is clear. The OPEN Act is the new alternative. It basically stops US-based advertising on offshore sites that let people pirate.
