Can you still get sued and/or put in jail?

Lets say I was given SSH login stuff and had permission to login and somehow I might have "HACKED" the server? And now I can see all the server files, including boot, var and all thoses juicy linux files...if that WERE to happen could I get sued or charged anything? Even if I didn't mean too?!

And lets say it's a major hosting company...like GoDaddy, as an example of course. And you downloaded all the files, to prove to the company you did and they had a hole in there system! What would you think they would do? If this WERE to happen should I call em' and be like "Hey you got a hole in your system on server XXXXX and heres the files to prove it!"???

If anyone here really knows how to hack and would like more information feel free to message me...

Well, hypothetically, what would happen if I killed this really annoying bitch. Sawed her into multiple pieces and then I hypothetically threw her bits and bobs into a polyethylene bin, and poured some sodium hydroxide and mixed it all up. Now, hypothetically, at this point she is little more then some brown soup with a few brittle bones. What if I then just happened to pour her remains, that looked like a melted slushy made from shit, down the toilet? Would I get caught?

You know what the sounds like? Like I fucked up big time and am now asking pretty dumb questions.

Did or did you not fuck up some servers and turn them into melted shit slushies?

I'm take that as yes. You just turned some motherfuckin servers into some motherfuckin strawberry slushies. Protip: Don't go through with it. You probably just broke a few laws, Robin Hood. They can have your ass in cuffs, good intentions set aside.

Well I first downloaded a few android apps for recording the call for legal reasons, then called them went though there whole automatic call system after a few minutes I got to a real person and well. I told them I was in the FTP and I kept hitting the back button trying to get to my home directory and some how ended up seeing the server files and they asked for the username I used and asked what I did at that point (and of course I called them right away) they said they will look into the breach and that it happens once in a while and it's a good thing I called in.

They didn't say anything about legal action or anything but from the looks of it I'm fine. But still I got an FTP login that has access to the files, I would think that would change it or at least deactive it...How in hell does FTP "now and then" get past the permissions?

Having access to the core linux files isn't really a security risk... you can't do much with it. Now, if you had access to a root login... that is something else.

You CAN delete some of the files and mess up the server. o3o
