I'd go for a intel i7 Quad core, because some *few but still some* games require more than 2 cores, it also gives you a little more stability.
I'm upgrading my processor, and I was wondering if you could help me
I need a socket 775 intel
right now I have an Intel Pentium E6500 @ 2.93GHz
I'd like to change for either an intel core2 quad or an intel core2 duo
what do you recommend and why?
ps: price does not count at this moment, I just want to hear your opinion on quad core / dual core

I would just get a new computer its hard to get core 2 quad and CPUs for 775 socket. Even if you could its all discontinued so it would be expensive as hell.
dude get a i5 or i7 and try if it fits if not return it back

tl;dr version: q6600, but I recommend you upgrade the whole build. Not worth getting anything better than the q6600 any more.
You can't use CPUs if they aren't made for the mobo socket / chipset you have ... seriously, get the fuck out of here and stop screwing around with everyone.
