If your running pc you could just make your save game read only and put it in the chest that clap trap has and your save game shouldn't overwrite but it should be in the chest as well, in theory.
EDIT: Just tested and it works, all you need is one character in sanctuary, the one with the gun you want to dupe has to have his save file as read only, put the gun you want to dupe into claptraps chest save and exit, the game shouldn't save so you still have the gun on that character and when you go to the chest it should be in there as well.
