Its not actually better for gaming, obviously i7 is better for gaming. Plus in your case (farming on vmware) it would have been a smart choice to buy an i7 cuz its 4 cores + 4 threads would be able to handle multiple operating systems way better and faster than your i5. In other words it would have been a "stable" choice.

But still I think you'll be able to play decently with around 4 vms plus your original.
