Do you use AVG? Because if you do disable AVG and reinstall the game.

I had that same problem, then re-installed CrossFire and said it wasn't the latest client.

Make sure you delete all of the contents in your "Log", "report", and "hgwc" folders. After you've done this, attempt to turn off your Anti-virus, or any program related to such (you may need Administrator permission to turn it off). After you've done this and your error persists, re-install the game, using the "Clean Restart" process found here: Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program
