If you want teh helpz on smudgeys, make some cloud smudge settings, they have good effects.

Hmm..
I just use a 19px hard brush.
Just put the strength jitter under other dynamics to 100%.
After that just fool around with the scattering and what not.

I prefer abstract. Grundge seems more amateur to me. All depends one what style though. I think abstract is more suited to your style.
