He wasn't even throwing the pencil directly AT you, you said he was throwing it across the room. Why would you throw a goddamn textbook at him. In my Geometry class, there are a lot of annoying little freshmans throwing shit across the room and yelling all the time. I just ignore it and finish my work.
If he was throwing the pencil directly at you and it hit you, then just say to him calmly, "Can you stop?" and if he still does it, grab the pencil from him, break it in half, and throw it away in the trash can.

Don't hit a kid with a textbook alright. Very stupid idea.

Reminds me of something that happened at my old school where this kid threw a display book at someone and it caused a broken/bloody nose.
There was literally blood all over the floor and the kid who threw the book walked out of the class like a bigshot.
