I think in the future China will be no.1. They're investing heavily in their future, making sure they have students who can complete globally, as well as investing in technologies of the future, green tech, etc.
The U.S. spent the last 80 years after WWII becoming heavily involved in global politics and global engagements. We have a lot of resources tied up because of this, supporting allies and such militarily. The U.S. I believe should attempt to focus on itself a bit more, helping its citizens succeed, because if they don't then they'll be left with a bunch of uneducated, under-specialized people trying to compete with countries who have spent time making sure their citizens can compete globally.
