    Volunteer work and College

Shit I have to get working this summer. So for those who actually have a job, what would you recommend for me to do in order to get a job (nothing gay...seriously...), forgot who, but someone here told me to constantly bother them about it until they hire you. I also have to start thinking about college, and I'm a computer science kinda nerd and the best college near me is MIT (doubt I will get in, 8% acceptance rate), and after that Worchester (don't even know where that is), and they are both mostly guys. (I don't like sausage fests) So I'm wondering, how do colleges and majors work? Do colleges have like certain courses, or do they have like anything you want to learn? Like would I be able to go to Harvard and take Computer Science? Halp me out here. On top of that, how can I make myself seem like an awesome person that all colleges want?

I mean like my cousin got rejected from most of the major ones around here, and she gets straight A's, where as I only get A's and B's and probably have like a B - B+ GPA. Only thing I can think of that's so great about me and not her is that I started doing MMA and I play paintball (so I'm a bit athletic), but my cousin did more educational stuff, like Recycling club, YouthCan, etc.
What would look better, my cousin or me? (Honest opinions plz, don't care if you love me)

Edit: Also, @Dave84311 can you be an awesome reference? Just kidding, if only.

You take baseline classes that cover all the subjects, and then you take what you want to on top of that. I only went for a month then I quit that shit. Being a little goody two-shoes prick also helps. Volunteer, help out the community, recycle. Colleges love shit like that.

Depends if they offer it. All colleges have the core classes though. I would suggest going to a community college for 2 years to get your core classes, and THEN switching to a bigger college for your major. It's a much cheaper way to do it, and you get the same end result.

My mom would KILL me if I go to a community college. And how can I figure out if they offer it? And does that mean I would have to take the same core classes again in the major college?

By going to CC, you can get most of your core credits for maybe half or even less the price of larger colleges. I don't really see what your mom's problem would be with a Community College. All a CC is, is a college that doesn't have specialized majors. You can just check around on the College's site and see what courses they have.

So if I go to a CC first, would the major college I get into require me to take the core classes too?

Well, finding a job is all about what you like to do, really.

starting out to just get money, I would go and see if there are any stores in the mall or a local restaurant that is hiring.

As for college, I'm kinda like you, computer science, that's what I want to major in. I'm still a junior, but next year I'm a senior, I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure you have to take 4 years of English. I'm pretty sure calc is needed and any type of physics class.

Good grades help you get more of chance of getting into the school you want to because UC schools are really competitive schools to get into. Colleges also look for sports you play. IE: if you've played a sport you've really like for 4 years of high school they'll accept you. And the community service you did outside of school

    Aren't you nice Hugo.
I think all colleges require you to take core classes for any degree, so yes, but not the same ones you already took at CC. It's basically getting the first 2 years of your college at a REALLY discounted price.

So far none, but Imma ask people from different programs I've been in (like enrichment programs and maybe even my MMA place), and probably teachers.

    Teachers should do it

For me, when I'm going to apply for volunteering at the hospital, I will be asking teachers also, and a doctor I worked with

Major collages are like jobs. Impress to get in. Its a simple as that.
Community colleges are basically schools that cost less, but allows you to get your core classes and ect. You can always transfer, but you have to make sure those classes credits are transferable.
Jobs.. same thing with collages except you most likely have to work from the bottom to the top. Meaning, get use to working at low paying jobs until you have something to back yourself up like a degree. You also have to remember that sometimes even that isn't enough.
Future planning is important... something I didn't do too well on so now I'm suffering.

    Life is hard
