If the person is getting uncomfortable from that, I think that may be the problem, because why would he/she get uncomfortable if that wasn't related to the cause...
Maybe that person is already basically shy, so he/she has a hard time to talk about it and you can't get any answers because of that.

Just be friendly and mention the option that if they ever wanted to, you've got. Never, ever force smoking down somebody else's throat, just leave it as an open option when they're ready. You don't have to encircle your social life around marijuana either... IMO, if somebody smokes so much and makes it seem like that's their only hobby or interest, it's just so pathetic. I've done my fair share, and have dozens of friends who do it too, but when some of them get out of hand and just make it their whole life, it sickens me.
