As of 40 minutes ago, the government shutdown is in effect.
So, what's going to happen? Hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be out of a job. National parks and museums will be closed. Absolutely no passports will be processed and/or issued. There will be no garbage pick up in Washington D.C (They generate about 500 tons of it in 1 week). I can't find any solid information on this, but to my understanding, anyone in the military will work w/ out getting paid. They may have passed a bill within the last week that would pay military workers in the event of the shutdown...I'm not really sure about that one, so let me know. When and/if this is over, these people may or may not be paid back.
Fortunately, USPS will still function and as well as social security. Funny thing is, medicaid, medicare, Obamacare, and all things related will be unaffected by this. Which leads me to wonder why they're even doing it...
I believe the last time this happened was in 1999 and lasted for about a month.
