Should a guy always pay for the date?

Whether it's a trip to the movies or a fancy restaurant, should the guy always pay for the date? As in, should he feel obligated to? If yes, why? If no, why? (It was a discussion me and a few friends were talking about)

IMO: It should always be split 50/50 because if the girl expects you to constantly pay for her stuff, it's time to move on, you caught a gold digger. I can see it be fine before when the guys mostly worked and the women were housewives and they were fine with just the guy making on the money. Now, the economy is shit and everyone has to work to keep the boat afloat. Gender equality right?
