ASUS with onboard AMD APU laptop would be much more cost effective and have just as good of warranty.

Even Dell's alienware would be better than mac.

ASUS, MSI and Sager just make sense for people. You can run Ubuntu, windows 8 and I think there is a way to run mac's os but that would be expensive.

Why do I suggest onboard graphics even when not gaming? All of the hulky new webbrowsers draw much faster on GPUs and new HD looking oses can be offloaded to GPU. There's tons of stuff that utilizes gpus and it's a much more efficient route than going just with intel HD graphics.

Sager and MSI's laptops do circles around Apples. MSI has one of the best laptop screens now as well if you're looking to buy something expensive

Thirdly I don't think I will ever buy a laptop ever again that said though the new ones are so thin Mini-ITX with a laptop screen attached can't compete at all.

A mac costs more than a Sager. I'm thinking even with student discount. I'm telling him he can get a $400 Asus on craiglist that is more compitent than current macs, $800 sager that has the parts of a $2200 mac, a $1000 msi with a $1200 Sager with $2800 mac parts. THeres a lot of wiggle room in 400-900 $ range on ASUS as well tons of DDR3 / USB3 asus's out there that do circles around mac in compatibility and if you ever need the juice it's there not to mention having that juice there in the first place just makes things smoother all the new HD OSes have animations and higher res pictures that run better not on Intel HD.
