AMD is a lot cheaper than Intel when it comes to cores.

    AMD FX FX-9590 Black Edition
    - 8 Cores
    - 4.7 GHz
    - $300

    Intel Xeon E5-2687W V2
    - 8 cores
    - 3.4 GHz
    - $2039

That being said, the people I know recommend Intel processors because of the profound actual power compared to AMD, which I honestly don't believe.
    Too bad I didn't know how cheap AMD was vs. Intel processors when I was building my own computer. ;-;

I'd recommend AMD, the processor I said for the comparison.

Alright, so I posted on another thread and stated the same thing. With computer parts, you are getting what you pay for, in almost every circumstance. I know people who have gone with Intel and AMD and both have had successes/failures. That being said, strictly personally, I am not a fan of AMD. For example, the "AMD FX FX-9590 Black Edition" that was mentioned earlier. Since its stock clocked at 4.7ghz, it runs fucking hot, all the time. Heat is enemy #1 in computer builds, it ruins your components and/or shortens their life substantially. Secondly, nobody needs 4.7ghz... I run a 3.4ghz Intel I7 and have only had my CPU max load through one method... That method involved me running 20 clients of Eve Online simultaneously.

However, just because it was at 100% load doesn't mean I couldn't run it perfectly fine. If I ever wanted extra power, I can easily overclock to 4.4ghz, but its completely unnecessary. Secondly, the 8-core option is useless. Primarily because Windows 7 (any version) will only unlock six of cores max. It is really important to understand what the core number even means. They essential spread out the load of programs you are running to different "areas" (cores) of the processor, keeping you from maxing out the entire processor. I run a quad-core and yet again everything is absolutely FINEEEE for everything under the sun.

Overall, I would go with Intel. I've built 3 PC's and have been constantly upgrading my own as well as helping any friends/family build or upgrade their computers as well. I believe I spent ~300 on my Intel 2600k 3.4ghz i7 (sandy) right before ivy series came out and I have not had a single issue with it since. It runs very cool (50celc under heavy load) with a normal heatsink (soon to be watercooling), it's never caused any errors, no problems whatsoever.

Feel free to PM me if you want any answers to any questions or need help with your build!

How do you not believe objective findings? It's well known that clock for clock, and core for core performance on Intel is much better in most scenarios, especially mid to high end.

I do believe that Intel is more powerful when it comes to core for core. I don't however believe that that statement is for every AMD CPU when compared to an Intel one. The reason I recommended AMD is because it's generally cheaper than Intel processors, nothing more.

Fair enough then. I find up to $200 AMD offers good value, but above that it's a lot more level.

But don't you think that games now adays depend alot more on the graphics card than the processor?

dude, for your price range a INTEL cpu just doesnt make sence,
get a 6300 its a good value,be sure to get a according MOBO and a graphics card about 2x the price of your CPU 270x-280x range

It depends really. Get an AMD processor, now get an Intel processor (online that is..) and compare their prices..
Look at things such as it's max clock speed + Threads.

Since your building your own PC, you might want to look at compatibility and other issues that come with buying Intel VS AMD.
