The series is ending soon, so the manga is worth a read. Although 3 minutes in the game is like 3 chapters so, kinda pick and choose I guess.
The reason he holds the Golden General piece, is because that piece is one of the most important pieces, and he sees himself as a superior being. People can argue that the King is the most important piece in Shogi, but the king can do little to no damage, while the Golden General can move any side in front of him, and behind. The king needs the Golden Generals to guard him in the match to make sure he cannot be checked, making it a very important piece.
In the Manga/Anime, Akashi sees himself as a superior, supreme being above his peers. He has never lost, and every move he does is absolute. If you wanna learn more, there is a Wiki.
