It's an episode, they were donated 890k and they needed 1 million and something to get another episode. It happens all the time on Kickstarter, a lot of visual novels are funded on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter is basically asking the audience to fund what you want to see ahead of time.

It's a good service if it's not abused.

They did the kickstarter because they felt that if they had made the anime normally, it wouldn't have been successful with distributors because the storyline is tragic, so they wanted to do it "independently?" - not sure if right word.

Also not sure if true, but I heard that they already had the set 26 episodes predetermined and just needed the funding. Also might have a movie for it as well, but still not completely sure about this.
