From the stories I have read, the people who have joined ISIS were not even practicing Muslims. There was one guy from the UK who went to Syria, who was a drug dealer. There was another guy who went to Bangladesh to recruit for ISIS, who was arrested for drink driving.

Certain things takes someone out of the fold of Islam, just like with anything. You cannot be a Muslim and then worship a person as God. You cannot be a Muslim and purposefully kill an innocent person. These are some of the major sins. Just like, you cannot be a pro on league of legends if you have never played the game. It doesn't matter what people claim, whether their claim is true depends on their actions. There is only one Islam and everything has already been agreed on, there are books explaining each verse of the Quran.
