A 10-year-old New Jersey boy who jumped out a classroom window to his death last month was upset that his chess opponent didn't say "checkmate" and had apparently threatened to jump several times before, a police report found.
The senseless tragedy at Grant Elementary School in Dumont saw the fifth-grader climb onto a shelving unit and through a gap in a window. He fell approximately 25 feet to the pavement below and died several hours later at a local hospital.
That horrific end apparently followed a verbal threat, but one that was brushed off because it had been heard by fellow students before, according to New Jersey's Record, citing the police report.
"Do you want me to do something drastic?" a lunch aide reported hearing the boy tell his chess opponent moments before, according to the report.
He then stood in a corner of the room and wrote a note which he then handed to his opponent.
He asked the fellow student not to read it until he was in the cafeteria, which everyone in the room was heading to, but it was confiscated by a lunch aide before that could happen.
When the aide looked back at the boy, she said she saw him already climbing toward the window. He was crying, she said.
