Fifa elections: Blatter wins and dark days ahead
Deep down, we all knew it was coming didn’t we: Blatter will remain Fifa president for the next four years.
Sepp Blatter has been officially re-elected as Fifa’s president for a fifth term by the world governing body’s 209 member associations.
Blatter, 79, saw off the challenge of Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein at Fifa’s annual Congress in Zurich. In a secret ballot he was re-elected with 133 votes from the 209 voting members. The process was to go to a second round of voting, after Blatter failed to get the 139 votes needed in the first round to win; a two-thirds majority was necessary. Blatter received 133 votes, Prince Ali 73 and three ballots were spoiled. However, Prince Ali conceded before the second round of voting took place – when a simple majority would have been enough for either contender to win.
Nepal: Schools in affected areas set to re-open
Thousands of schools damaged during April's devastating earthquake in Nepal have begun to re-open.
More than 25,000 classrooms were destroyed in the 7.8 magnitude quake and its aftershocks, and more than 8,000 people died.
Many have only been rebuilt on a temporary basis using materials such as bamboo, wood and tarpaulin.
Classes will initially focus on group activities to help children recover from the trauma of the disaster.
The Nepalese government closed all schools in the earthquake-affected areas of Kathmandu and its surrounding districts for the month of May, as families struggled to rebuild their lives.
Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless.
In the worst-hit districts of Gorkha, Sindhupalchok and Nuwakot, it is estimated that more than 90% of schools were destroyed.
Ministry of Education official, Lavadeo Awasthi, told the Times of India that the temporary classroom structures "will have to do for the next two years, in which time the buildings should be restored".
Barrel bomb strikes kill 72 in Aleppo province, in Syria
At least 72 people have been killed in Syria's northern Aleppo province by barrel bombs dropped from government helicopters, activists say.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 60 people died in the strike on al-Bab - a town currently held by Islamic State (IS) militants.
It says 12 were killed in a rebel-held quarter of the city of Aleppo.
Syria's government has repeatedly denied using barrel bombs - large containers filled with explosives.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which gathers information through a network of activists in Syria, called it one of the worst massacres perpetrated by the government so far this year.
Meanwhile, Islamic State is reported to have blown up Tadmur prison near the ancient city of Palmyra - which fell to the militants earlier this month.
The prison was for decades a symbol of state oppression in Syria. It had held thousands of political prisoners, who faced years of torture and disease in its cells. Many were executed.
Lenovo Introduces Futuristic Smart Mobile Technologies
Electronics giant Lenovo has plenty of innovation up its sleeve and the company is showing off at least some of it at Lenovo Tech World, its first-ever global technology event in Beijing. Lenovo revealed concept devices, like a smart watch (pictured), smartphone virtual keyboards and more at the show.
The Next Wave of Wearable Tech Will Be Your Clothing
The next time someone tells you your outfit is looking smart, they may not just be complimenting your fashion sense. At its annual Google I/O conference, the company unveiled Project Jacquard, a connected fabric that can turn your entire wardrobe into wearable technology.
The structure of textiles is the same as the structure of the touchscreens built into phones and other mobile devices,” says Ivan Poupyrev, technical program lead for Google ATAP. “If you replace some of the threads in textiles with conductive threads, you should be able to weave the textile into something that can recognize a variety of simple touch gestures.
Apple Acquires Augmentd Reality Firm Metaio
Tech giant Apple has acquired Metaio, a company that creates tools for authoring, rendering and managing Augmentd-reality applications, for an undisclosed sum, according to legal documents filed in Germany.
A notarized registration form filed in a Munich court indicates that 29,121 Euros (around $32,000) in shares held by Metaio were transferred to Apple last week. Based in Munich, Metaio was founded in 2003. The company grew out of an internal project at Volkswagen to provide specifications and instruction manual overlays on images of different auto parts.
No further details have been provided by either Apple or Metaio about the transaction. However, the reported acquisition indicates that Apple, like Google and Microsoft Relevant Products/Services, sees a growing market opportunity in virtual/Augmentd-reality technology.
Konmai Apologizes
There was uproar earlier this month when reports began to surface that Konami had adopted a "mobile first" strategy to new game development. "Our main platform will be mobile," Konami CEO Hideki Hayakawa said, according to a NeoGAF translation of a Nikkei Trendy interview. "Mobile is where the future of gaming lies." Startling stuff, if that was what Hayakawa had actually said.
It wasn't. We updated our report with a more complete translation the same day it ran, but Konami is clearly still trying to get the word out that it's hasn't abandoned traditional game platforms. Those early reports "lacked the necessary context and caused unrest within our key stakeholders including our community.
New Batman Arkham Knight trailer
There's also a new trailer. Thankfully this one isn't live-action. Instead, it's seven and a bit minutes of footage (taken from the PS4 version, alas) following on from the "Officer Down" trailer of a couple of months ago.
