Astrid Lindgren was born in 1902 to her parents Samuel August, and Hanna Ericsson. They lived on a rectory that was built in 1411 where Samuel August was a tenant. Samuel was a good author, and had an excellent memory as well. He remembered a lot of things from his childhood that he then would retell for his children. While Hanna was extremely good at languages, she wished to become a schoolteacher.
Astrid and her 3 siblings went to a small school in Vimmerby. There Astrid was interested in writing, and reading. One of her essays for school was published in the local newspaper and thus earned the nickname Vimmerby's Selma Lagerlöf.
