Religion-something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
You can make anything religious.
Doesn't have to be the belief of a Divine creator or creators.
Short version: Teacher: Atheism is religion
Students: Atheism is not religion
So, I got into a debate during class with my teacher and some other classmates about atheism(mainly in order to skip learning about shit I get bored at since they're too easy).
My teacher said that Atheism is a religion, as quote from what he said:
Religion is "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs".
If you believe a God caused it, it's a religion. If you believe fuit caused it, it's a religion. If you believe nothing all-powerful caused it, it's still a religion. Nothing will change that.
However, me and my classmates said:
Atheism is the lack of belief in deities. There is not "set beliefs". Just a lack of. Just because something is atheist, it doesn't automatically make them evolutionists either. Religion is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or a set of beliefs concerning the origin AND purpose of the universe. Religion needs be a set of beliefs. Atheism is the lack of belief. Therefore, Atheism is not a religion.
What's your thoughts? Just need something to say "AHAHHAHAHA I BEAT YOU" to my teacher.

Atheism, in a broad sense, is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.
Tell you teacher that he is stupid.
Atheism is a belief, not a religion.
tell your teacher to learn the difference.

Atheism in and of itself cannot be a religion, although there can be an atheistic religion.

"We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little at a truth we find bitter." ~ Denis Diderot
The bottom line is you can turn anything into a religion.
Somebody could make a Goldfish their God if they wanted..
write up their own beliefs on how they should worship it,
slap a fancy name on it, and call it a religion.
If Atheists had a group they attended,
and they had set guidelines that they followed,
or practice within this group, they can consider it their Religion.
