Really? Damn, I feel somewhat shocked when I hear that these great generals die in ways that don't correspond to their glorious lives. Or when they get killed in treacherous ways...
This just reminded me. If you know a bit about the Crusades... During the 3rd Crusade, imagine if Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa hadn't drowned crossing the river Selef on his way, after successfully crossing Asia Minor... He had a massive army of 600,000 men, and their morale was shot down when they found out he had died, and they all disbanded and/or returned home... It could have changed the course of history if this army was successful in reaching the "Holy Land".
Surely there are many other factors, but it's quite a brainstorm.
PS : It was known to be the largest army ever to set out on a crusade.
