To begin, this verse is referring to a SPECIFIC BATTLE, this verse is not an order on Muslims, and this verse is talking about a battle that took place. The battle it is referring to is the battle of Badr.

Let me just correct you on something, I haven't read this whole post but you took that verse WAY out of context, a simple act of copy and paste. Let's look back at the full verse: "(Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels, "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes."[8:12]

Also, let me copy and paste this since I have explained this a million times and it gets tiring.

This is the story of the Battle of Uhud. The battle of Uhud took place when Abu Sufyan, a disbeliever, and leader of Quraysh tribe planned to attack the messenger(peace be upon him) and avenge their loss of the battle of Badr. The reason for the battle was to resist the Quraysh attack.

So the first part of the verse is a reminder to Muslims fighting that battle to not be scared because God is with them, and that God will cast terror into the hearts of those enemies, Abu Sufyaan's army.

Al-`Awfi reported, that Ibn `Abbas said about the battle of Badr that Abu Jahl(The leader of Quraysh, who was the biggest enemy of the Muslims) said, "Do not kill them (the Muslims), but capture them so that you make known to them what they did, their ridiculing your religion and shunning Al-Lat and Al-`Uzza (two idols).''

So the second part of the ayah was revealed to punish the army of Abu Jahl. Those who participated in the war and were not killed had their fingers/toes cut so that the other people can know who they are.

Peaceful religion does not mean that if an enemy attacks, you sit and die yourself.
