As for the second point, yes I somewhat do blame the majority actually; because a considerable number of Muslims, while not actively taking part themselves, are apologetic to extremist actions and are pro-Mujahideen.

The impact could have destroyed a large part of the structure/beams. The remaining beams probably couldn't hold the weight of the structure and it just crumbled on itself..
