How did you deal with scammers before Middlemen?

How did you guys deal with scamming and trades before middlemen came around?
just looking at old reports, like no moderators there.
looked like the other users were the jury and judge?

Like not trading with a member who joined two days ago and had 1 post for starters

I'm pretty sure it was a normal trade where they could come up with an agreement on how the trade goes.
