Steam region locked games nowadays?

Im just curious how the steam region lock works now? i used to do it like year ago when you just needed activate games with vpn and then you can just turn vpn off and play. i have heard some rumors that you need to vpn to play aswell?

try to check if the game have your country version of it. they usually did that to prevent people buying games that will not work on their region or business purpose.

Most games lock gets removed after 3-4 months(MGSV) but some like BO3 nearly takes a year to get removed.

Some games can be redeemed with a VPN on accounts which do not own Counter-Strike: Global Offensive already.
Also, to redeem the gift, the account must not have a region already.
This means that only accounts which did not make a purchase since 2009/2010 or new created accounts can be used to redeem these type of gifts (Region locked).
After activation via VPN you can play the game without using VPN.
This does not work in all games.
Also, some region locked games are "Unlocked" after some months have passed after activating them in the account.
