Not really safe, Dave can see all Logs and IP's and other data. If LE requested data, i doubt he would hesitate in giving it over.
This new requirement of IM is literally facebook tier spying, not a fan of it.

The main issue with IM is that people can use it without entering an accounts 2FA code.

This means 2FA is effectively useless whilst IM is out. Needs to be fixed ASAP

the messages are encrypted while sending or receiving the to/from server with tls encryption (https)
i don't think that they are stored in the encrypted way on the server though
server has to know what to send back to the user so it would have to decrypt it anyway which makes it completely useless
the only good reason for encryption is when u use p2p chat which doesnt save any data on the server
as far as i know mpgh im chat doesnt provide this kind of the feature and probably won't

if you want to know if the messages are secure from 3rd party
i wouldn't use it for daily chat which may include personal informations
it's a good solution for selling on mpgh items though
it's secure as far as noone hacks the database and gets all the chat logs

here goes my suggestion:
prune old im messages (for example 3 months or older)
so in the case of a leak it won't contain WHOLE data
