For "noobies", I wouldn't suggest going straight into a language. My suggestion is you learn algorithms and pseudo code before jumping into programming. Learn program control structures (sequence, repetition, and decision making), basic looping, and learn your way around an IDE. Hope this helps.

I bought Beginning C++ Game Programming by Michael Dawson. I actually learned quite a bit from this book. Still learning much! Easy to read because he breaks things down to analogies so that you understand what is what and of course the samples in the disk. The book i think cost me around 33$, but i'm sure you can get it for a few bucks.
