You can't tell me that Afghanistan, Palestine, Sudan, Iran, and Iraq were prosperous nations before we trudged in there. Heck, the issue with Palestine would be solved if Israel wasn't so heavily stubborn (blame can go both ways on this one). And Vietnam was going through struggle already back then, we just attempted to sway it one way (a bad decision, but we weren't the sole reason why it's "ruined" by your standards. All those leaders you mentioned had potential. We were trying to build allies in the area. While that itself may be controversial, we only turned against them after they were repeatedly warned for human rights abuses/attacks on Americans.

And the stupidity of Americans thinking everything can be solved with war just makes me laugh. You cant beat the terrorists with war, which is why the war on terror will be another war in long list of wars USA has lost.

Your thoughts are generally agreeable, but I want to interject that Islam is not necessarily that bad. It's only in extreme forms (i.e. Taliban, Iran's government, terrorism groups) that it seems to "encourage people to murder in the name of "God", or makes it so human beings can be stripped of their rights, and forced into a life of obedience or death".

There are a few Muslim-dominated countries that do fine simply because they are kept moderate and secular (Turkey.. and Singapore?). In the Islamic Golden Age, some caliphs would let non-believers have similar/equal rights to Muslims.

Religion usually has contradicting ideas. Some passages in the Koran mention tolerance and kindness to all. Other passages urge for the forced conversion of non-Muslims or death. The Christian bible also has similar contradictions.

It is simply a matter of how you choose to interpret it. Personally, I don't really mind as long as it's not being imposed on me/people using it as the sole justification for their actions.


Edit: and btw, yes, Al Qaeda is definitely much weaker than it used to. Its command structure has been repeatedly targeted (and successfully so) by our C.I.A.'s drone program and our special forces. The crucial info obtained from the Bin Laden raid has pretty much shattered their network. International sanctions and the stigma attached to their name has decimated their finances.
It is evidenced in its lack of activity.
