Re-color Hair?

So I have done some searching and so far I have only come up with 1 guide on how to do this and it was with photoshop. I can't get the DDS plugin to work with my photoshop so im stuck using gimp which I hate. The guide also had random picture of photoshop open with nothing there and only about 2 picture had any words so its like a guessing game/guide as to what to do.

If anyone could direct me in the right direction or explain it to me I would greatly appreciate that and upload any hair I change the color of. Below you will see my character with the school girl hair but its still purple

NVM, I am using a portable PS cs4 cuz its only like 50 mb and I assumed it was 64 bit but apparently it's 32 bit that's why the plugin wasn't working before. How could I have been that dumb -.-
