All im saying is i wouldn't go for a reference GTX680 card... I'm running a MSI GTX680 (reference) just now and sure i can play BF3, MW3, GTA IV ect. on max setting with respectable framerates (avg. 70+ FPS, intense situations on BF3 i can see drops to ~45) but it has one major downfall... if runs too hot for my liking. I have seen the 680 top out at 78c! so basically if you want a 680 go for a liquid cooled one or a non-reference card with improved cooling

100x overkill for your resolution, 120Hz 27" 2560x1440p or go home for a $1000 gpu.

If you post your specs I can tell you exactly what to upgrade and why to do it, and to what degree to upgrade it to.
First off the 690 is 2 680's clocked @ performance just above that of 2 670's. The 7990 from powercolor how ever features 3 6+2 pin PCI power connections allowing for full power to each GPU, meaning the 7990 will infact out perform all previous dual gpu cards on the market. Beyond that the current 680 v 7970 debate is moot at best as both are within striking distance of each other on nearly every game, its a buyers market and 680 or 7970 you will not be disappointed.

To be honest, i don't see the point in getting a GTX 690 when you could just get 2 680's instead for even more power

It is for gaming, but if you want a graphics card for rendering etc. you want the NVIDIA Quadro Plex 7000. Its $14000 btw.
