I'm not sure if Itachi Genjustu would work on a Rinnegan users.
And I don't think he used it on Edo Nagato but maybe it doesn't?
I mean it goes: Sharingan --> Mangekyo Sharingan --> Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan --> Rinnegan.
The rinnegan is an evolution of the EMS but I don't think it's excluded from Genjutsu.
Pain, hands down.

Itachi.
Better strategy, powers would bypass peins defense(if not eventually), and generally just a higher player.
The rinnengan is called better than the sharingan, but so far in the series it has been the sharingan ahead of all the other eye techniques.
Itachi would win.
Pretty easily. Itachi has a great mind and knows how to plan techniques and such.
Techniques he would use:
Susanoo
Sword of totsuka whatever is it
Yamata shield
Izanami
Those techniques will easily beat Pain. Pain may have the rinnegan but his use of it isn't as clever as itachi uses his jutsus. Using sword of totsuka to easily rip Nagato's soul out.
So Itachi wins for me.

How does Itachi Bypass push/pull ?
Your down grading the omega living shit out of the push/pull. IDK if its becuase you think it to basic of a technique or what. But when Pain Pushes/destroys Konoha, Everyone including there clones if they made any are gone. Clones don't mean shyt to the push pull effect.
*Pushes Itachi and Amaterasu.
or
Itachi uses Amaterasu/ Pein counters with Naraka Path (absorbs ifinite amount of chakra)
I think you guy forget the only reason Nagato lost was due to Plot/Talk/Story no justu.....
Show me an example of the shield pushing back something. I think that just myth over hype talk. Susano itself is the same all over (except the sword that cats genjutsu), it just forms into the shape of the shield and a sword. Just to make it simple for our simple minds. Shield doesn't necessarily reflect everything...
And if he was so indestructible, why did he he lose to Sauske with it...Because it uses way to much chakra(to the extent Itachi died of exertion) and is extremely slow and avoidable.
Pein on the other hand can simply push you and your Susano away (and pain has a shitload of shit omega chakra-comparable to Naruto in 8 tail form)/
And why did it take Itachi Naruto Bee to beat the one Nagato....(Rinnegan is OP as fuck, thats why).
This is honestly a very hard choice.
Yeah, you could argue that Itachi beat Nagato after he was revived by the Edo Tensai, but that was because his body was frail and slow.
During their prime, this is a very hard choice to make. I don't think Izanami would affect Nagato. Izanagi (if Itachi can even use it) can only be used twice before he's blind. (Once if he wants to keep his vision). Genjutsu COULD work if Pain doesn't see it coming, but I'm pretty sure he would from a Sharingan user. Amaterasu and Susano'o are the only real trouble he's going to have to deal with. BUT, he can outrun the sword of Totsuka, probably absorb Amaterasu, and counter in many ways.
It would probably be a close fight, but I would have to go with Pain.
