And the fact is in your answer itself, the common sense of current era is by far the oversmartnessnessnessness of people. We are'nt capable of assuming everything. The inventions, discoveries, theories that we praise, use and remember are based on facts and not on assumptions. Its a far thing for us humans to assume about Universe (though almost all cosmological facts are based on assumptions that have not been proven yet) and so its a immature thing to believe something that has not been proven.
