Why?
Well, take a very simple password: "password". Our human brain thinks it's simple because we recognize it, but to the computer, it's just another string of 0s and 1s.
So, what that means is, if you were to brute-force the password (a, b, c... aa, ab, ac.... aaa,aab) it would take an overwhelming powerful CPU plus an extreme amount of time, both of which we don't have.
Over to cracking.
Cracking is slightly different. We take common passwords like "123456" or "qwerty" and we try to login with those. If it works, yay! If not, then try the next one.
Your friend's account probably had an insecure password, and was cracked easily.
