GYOKURO OF TopGear PRESENTS: CAMOUFLAGE TUTORIAL

Hi guys, for all of you asking on how I make my camouflages: here is a tutorial, how to make a camouflage and how to make it overlay-worthy.
Basic camouflage tutorial:

 

Open up a new document.

This window will open up. If you want a large-blotched camouflage, choose 5200 by 5200

If you want a small-blotched camouflage, choose 1024 by 1024

Go to -->Filter-->Render-->Clouds. Press CTRL+L

This will be your base camouflage layer. Move the left and right pointers to the center.

Right click the "Background" and click "Layer from background".

Call it whatever you like.

Make a new layer by using: CTRL+Shift+N, this will be the main background color.

Don't forget to drag this under the main camouflage. And hide the "cow camouflage layer"

Fill this background layer with white.

Find a color scheme and/or camouflage that you want to use, and open it in Photoshop

Select the background or most common color with the color picker tool

Switch to your new document

Fill the color you picked from the document

Show the main camouflage layer.

Go to Select-->Color Range

Max out the fuzziness and select the white color

Go to Select-->Modify-->Smooth

Type in 20 for the sample radius

Push the delete and/or backspace key on your computer to delete the white spaces

Inverse the selection by going to Select-->Inverse

This is the result.

Switch to the color scheme/camouflage document, and select the second-most common color

Switch back to your new document and go to Edit-->Fill

Select color on the drop-down menu, and select the color you chose from the other camouflage.

Click "Ok"

Now, you can show the base layer to see the start of the camouflage.

Hide the last two layers after making a new layer. Repeat the camouflaging process on two to three more layers *THIS IS IMPORTANT: SHIFT THE POINTER IN THE LEFT DIRECTION A LITTLE BIT MORE FOR THE NEXT TWO TO THREE LAYERS* and you will get something that looks like this:

Digitizing your camouflage and making it overlay worthy:

 

Flatten your image by right clicking any layer name and choosing the "Flatten image" option

Go to Filter-->Pixelate-->Mosaic, pick out a pixel-cell size you want to use

This is the result:

Go to Filter-->Sharpen-->Sharpen more

Do it three more times, by choosing CTRL+F

This is important: MIX, MATCH, AND RESIZE, TRY OUT DIFFERENT COMBOS. If you didn't like this tutorial, or what it produces in the screenshots, Just try it out and do different things, shift the pointer into different places when you do CTRL+L *KEEP THEM BOTH IN THE SAME POSITION (i.e move them both to the same place)* for smaller blotches. Remember, good camouflages come with great experience. That is pretty much it.

I've learned it myself, and haven't used any resources other than filing through all the functions in Photoshop. This tutorial could be independently discovered, and if someone has a patent on it, then go ahead and sue me \(^-^)/
