Ohh yea, to add on. I had an old laptop before this. It was shitty, I'm talking 4 years old graphics card shitty, but it ran minecraft fine on decent settings.
Ok, we all know the game minecraft...right? Well i got a pretty decent computer but yet i still lag. I't takes everything on low with optifine to get some decent fps. Personally i think it's my graphics card and ram. My specs- CPU-AMD Athlon 64 2x 4000+ 2.10GH GPU- Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
RAM-2GB. Christmas I am getting a new graphics card and better RAM. THe new graphics card will be a GeForce GT 630 2GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI express 2.0. For RAM it's going to be two 2GB G-Skill Ripjaws x series 240 pin DDR3. Any help with my current specs?

You have a good enough power supply?

Clean your pc from dust.
Upgrade your computer.
Try to use some booster program.
I hope some of these helped.

1.) Update you graphics card drivers. This really helped for me, as I was also experiencing lag, but then I upgraded my drivers and all was well.
2.) Clean your PC of crap. Crap can build up on your computer, slowing it down and using resources. Here is a program that will clean the crap from your PC:
Download | The PC Decrapifier
3.) Update your OS. Updating your operating system can really help. I have XP, and I sued to have SP1. I upgraded to SP3, and my speed increased dramatically.
4.) Clean your PC of dust.
5.) Overclock your GPU (Not Recommended). I have a 5450 1GB, so it can be annoying when I get lag. I then used AMD overdrive to overclock my GPU, and I got less lag and better gameplay.
A Quick Note:
If I were you, I would get not 2GB GSkill RAM, but 4GB of Cheaper RAM. All RAM does exactly the same thing, so it really isn't worth it to splash out the extra cash. The MHz also does not really matter; as the latency will cancel it out.
It seems to be that the higher the MHz, the higher the latency. Here is a video you should totally check out:

1. All my drivers are up to date, i checked just in case.
2. I did a recent format about a month ago, my computer is pretty clean.
3.My windows 7 has had all updates, all that I downloaded and installed from the windows update.
4.When I formatted my hard drive a month ago, I took a hard blowing fan and did a clean through. I made sure i got the processor real good.
5. Thats something I am kind of sketchy on. The last time I overclocked something was my processor, and i sort of failed, because it overheated drastically with water cooling. Also I didn't take the power supply into thought. I have an Nvidia so, if there is a program that does OCing for Nvidias please let me know. Finally, I'm not sure if my motherboard supports OCing. I haven't found a good program that can check.
And for the G-skill, they are actually better. THat is because they are a DDR3 and they are 240-pin, but since I am tight on money, I might just get some normal ram, and lop side it with the 2Gb I have.
