Well, they are a bit different.
Ping is the time that it takes for a signal to get sent to the server and back to your computer. Like a radar.
Latency is the time it takes for information to be created and sent to a server (or another computer).

Just in case you managed to, here's your explanation dumbed down a bit.
High Latency means basically it took too long for your computer to send information to the server. Or vice versa. Information being packets.
