[Review] Tokyo Ghoul

Ok so I'm going to do this in two parts: Anime and Manga(general). This is a review for people who at least know what the series is and what it's about.
THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS
[Note] Good/Bad for simplicity.


Anime

What I liked:
-The action scenes
-The opening

-The adaptations of the main characters was pretty well done.
-For the most part all the characters are very colorful in their anime counterpart.(a feat that's hard to do for these series).
-Some unimportant characters are expanded upon.

What I disliked:
-Morita, Shuhei(the director).
-Well the story is fucked. The adaptation from the manga cuts a lot of scenes out, kills some of them, and....switches the gender of some.(why?). Needless to say this is going to be a one season show. Just like Deadmanwonderland.
-Censorship: It's pretty ridiculous at how bad it is. At times 90% of the screen is pure black.
-The start of the story is so boring and done really bad.

I give it a 6/10.
-It's better than your average action/powers anime.

Manga(general)


Story: I like Tokyo Ghoul, but it has a weird story. It's just odd. Pacing, characters, events, everything is off. The story focuses so much on unimportant characters it's astounding. I've never really seen a story so padded with completely unimportant characters and events.
There are four main events.
-Kaneki becomes a ghoul and has to deal with ghoul society
-Kaneki gets captured and becomes white-kaneki.(they have a big fight)
-Kaneki goes to the science center and finds out about the conspiracy.
-The owl war event.

 

Ending: So the ending was pretty much shit. It kind of makes the point that there was no actual meaning to the entire series. Kaneki dying is fine, but literally nothing changed as far as any events went. The ghouls are still doing their shit, the owl's are still out there, and the "doves" are still killing the ghouls. Nothing changed at all since the start really, except for the fact that the ghouls are at a disadvantage now.

NOTE: Amon Koutarou does not deserve the screen time that he gets. He's useless, irrelevant, and by god he's just so pathetic. Like he doesn't even kiss the girl he's been flirting with for 40+ chapters. Fuck that guy.

Characters: I like white-kaneki, touka, and that psycho-zombie chick. That's it. Everyone else is either poorly developed or just fucking lame.
-I'll give points for the "gluttony" character, if only that he just comes in randomly and eats people.
-There is a very important character who gets practically no buildup on the Doves side, The "Reaper".

Art: It's good. Sometimes a bit too loose in the frames, but really good where it counts.(can get a bit confusing though).

I'll give it a 7/10.
-The story/character bullshit aside, I enjoyed the action. The art is a nice change from solid/hard lines and I always enjoy this type of art style.

Do I recommend Tokyo Ghoul? Yes.

Other series you might like if you like Tokyo Ghoul:
Zetman, Holyland, Deadmanwonderland, Feng Shen Ji.

Funimation censors their shows. I believe CR also uses that version.

The uncensored version is of course the one you want, I just found it ridiculous that something so low caliber gets censored.

I dont think keneki is dead I didnt see a death scene, plus the author developed the character so well i doubt he would just kill him off, waist of potential dont ya think?

overall I really enjoyed the anime and the part 1 of the manga. also arguably that torture chair scene is the best I've ever read in any manga thus far and I loved the premise and concept of the show, cant wait for more !

Wait, isn't it Japan censoring these shows? I remember reading that Tokyo Ghoul wasn't a late night anime, so that's why they had to censor it. Then again HxH has some pretty gory scenes and it used to air during the day...

They censor Jojo's too. If it airs on primetime it gets censored. Really it's for DVD sales.

yep... I saw alot of scenes that hinted a lot of different possible outcomes with all that said wanna make a bet empire? its all just speculation but **in my opinion

 

Kaneki isn't dead because although he isnt full ghoul he although its hinted that he got his ONE of his kagune removed and suitcased in theory ghouls should die, but doesnt he have 2 kagune? so he could recover... its probably just me being a fanboy and not being able to accept... anyways we will all probably find out come October

They censor Jotaro smoking. But they don't censor Sanji, Smoker, Revy, etc. etc. Only because Jotaru is supposedly in highschool lol.

Season 2 of TG has just been announced to air in January 2015 which is fantastic, so far this has gotten into my top 3 anime of the year and I'm glad to see it get another season. I won't be able to wait that long and I'm going to marathon the manga tonight probably so @Empire what chapter does season 1 leave off on?
