Besides there are different courts in Australia for different offence levels.

Even if you didn't, it's common sense - if you are going to be missing work, you have to call out and let management know so they can mitigate the call-in by either rearranging people or calling someone to come in. You yourself said you could not contact him until 8PM that night. If you were in a management position, why would you keep someone that NO-CALL, NO-SHOWS. What does that tell about someone? They're irresponsible, unreliable, those 2 attributes alone are something you don't want in an employee.

Before you quote me and assert that I'm a dick because I have no remorse for your situation or what you've endured, I'm telling you this from an objective, real world perspective. Yes, the missing of work was not planned, but you didn't have a few minutes of your time to call in? Maybe you didn't plan to be alive anymore after that morning but you should have expected this then. If you didn't have a few minutes, well, it is a no call no show and you contacted them way after the fact. I don't know what you expected but it obviously wasn't you continuing your job as if nothing happened. Nonetheless, I think I would tend to agree that your boss has no remorse either and is a bit of a dick, however would you have the same opinion if you were replaced by an employee not his daughter or are you implying favoritism?
