I always extract the disc image too and just install from the files since I can't bother to have virtual drives (I just find them annoying). So no, you don't have to mount.

Some people find it simpler to burn the CD or mount it than extract it. It might be a bit faster too, seeing as you don't have to wait for it to be extracted

Just extract the iso and install it from the extracted files, easiest way and no messing around is required
