I have seen only a couple of servers that have multicolored MOTD's. So, I assume that not many people know how. That is why I am creating this tutorial.
To change MOTD colors, start by opening the server.properties file in your server. After you have done this, go down to the line that starts with "motd=". In front of the words you want to change colors of, put one of the following codes to produce the corresponding color. For purposes of demonstration, I will be using "&a", the code for green. Remember that &a is not the only code you can use. The rest of the color codes are listed below.
In this MOTD, I wrote "&aThis is a multicolored MOTD." Writing "&a" made all the words following the code turn green. Here is a picture of this MOTD:
Now that you understand how it works, here are all the color codes:
&0 produces black text:
&1 produces blue text:
&2 produces deep green text:
&3 produces aqua text:
&4 produces deep red text:
&5 produces purple text:
&6 produces gold text:
&7 produces gray text:
&8 produces dark gray text:
&9 produces light blue text:
&a produces green text:
&b produces teal text:
&c produces red text:
&d produces magenta text:
&e produces yellow text:
&f produces white text, making it pretty much useless.
Using these codes strategically, you can make very pretty MOTD's, like the one on cheeseman's server:
Thank you for reading my tutorial! Post any questions you have or suggestions for this tutorial.
(By the way, here is the text in my server.properties file, just to give you an idea of what you can do
Code:&cHello.&e Build&d something&a fairly&b epic!
have fun with it

You should add "Creative Mode" in the title.
I don't host servers, but this tutorial looks like it took awhile to write so you get my thanks. Good thorough tutorial.
