Disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc have been happening since the beginning of human history (and before as well) They will continue to happen, until the earth become completely destroyed, or stops functioning altogether. Meaning, the idea of some natural event wiping out the entire human race (and us not seeing it coming at the very least 6 months away) is pretty rediculous, and is nothing more than folklore beefed up by media/public paranoia. Even if this cataclysmic event happened, humankind would probably still have a chance as the same way we have for as long as we have been around. We can adapt, and outsmart our situation.

If war would be the cause of 2012, then even though most of mankind could be wiped out, there would be plenty of survivors. Frankly, I think we could stand a war or two, to help a little with population control. Even a nuclear war would have survivors. It might not be the most livable conditions, but needless to say we will survive.

A comet would be one of the only other options, and we would be able to see that come long before it happened.

Well it is technically possible to set up a space ship and jet us off somewhere. Though we would have no real way of surviving once we get there, accommodations could still be made. If we built a large enough ship there really isnt anything stopping it from being self contained and inhabitable.

It would be a major long shot, but with the technology we have, and the worlds resources combined, it would not be quite a big a stretch.
