Obsidian as we all know is possibly one of the hardest materials to get in game. Not the hardest, but due to it not occurring naturally, and being difficult to mine, it becomes that much more rare. Before the most effective method of obsidian farming was to make a 7 block long trough, fill it with 7 buckets of lava, and pour water over it. Then dry the water and collect your obsidian.
But with this method, you can continually farm obsidian, and not keep traveling back and forth to the nether/caves to gather buckets of lava. So in this detailed picture tutorial I will tell you exactly how to get as much obsidian as you want.
This tutorial abuses a glitch with redstone. For every piece of redstone dust you have, you can get one piece of obsidian for it.
If you do not know how to come across large amounts of redstone, stay tuned for another guide I am writing on how to easily collect redstone, as well as the diamonds you will be needing to mine the obsidian.
Step 1
Gather your materials. This is just for a good clean simple version, you can use more dirt instead of glass.
Step 2
Start off with this formation. 2 blocks high on the end, then then 3 blocks on the ground, skip a place, then 2 blocks high again.
Step 3
Make an archway over it, just like so. 2 Blocks high, with 1 block 1 space above the ground til the end, with 2 more blocks.
Step 5
Repeat.
Step 6
Dig a 1 block deep ditch just under your last arch.
Step 7
Make a wall of glass (you can use dirt, glass was used for demonstration) just like so on the front side of what you have built. Leave the opening for a dirt doorway to use later.
Step 8
Go on ahead and build your dirt door like this.
Step 9
From the top, place your one bucket of water in the spot just like this, at the very most left side of the structure. Make sure that the water flows on top of those three blocks, then drops down.
Step 10
From the left, destroy the three blocks under the water. Be sure to wait a second or two after placing the water to do this. Make sure you destroy all three blocks too. Nothing more, nothing less.
Step 11
Get your redstone ready, and deploy it in the space between that little ditch, and the glass (or dirt) like so:
Step 12
Get your lava ready, and place it exactly where shown.
Step 13
After setting the lava, take a step back and watch the transformation. As the lava hits the redstone, it mysteriously becomes obsidian.
Step 14
After all 4 blocks have been set, go back and pick up your bucket of lava, ready to use in the next round.
Step 15
Begin your process of mining the obsidian. You will need a diamond pickaxe to do this. Each block will take 15 seconds, so it will take you about a minute to get all 4. This adds up to ~240 per hour, if done steadily and diligently. Its hard, but its a lot less work than previous methods, which all included hammering away at obsidian as well.
Step 16
Repeat as necessary.
This glitch will surely be patched in a future update. Use this while you can to get as much as possible before it does.
I will be including an attachment to a world where one is already built, to let you see how it will look. Extract, then drag the folder to your saves folder located in the .minecraft directory.

Method 2
This method is more compact and uses less materials than the other one. It also takes up less space. I have always preferred above ground generators, but this may be suited to those who dont quite have the room, or are more interested in a compact version.
Step 1
Gather your materials, and set up a small space to build.
Step 2
Dig a ditch 4 blocks long, 1 deep.
Step 3
Put your water at one end of the ditch now.
Step 4
Dig out four more blocks right next to your original ones.
Step 5
Underneath the four you JUST dug out, dig one more block down.
Step 6
Dig out four more again. The water should NOT flow into it. If it does, make sure you did the last step right.
Step 7
Build a line of blocks across just like this.
Step 8
Fill it in on the other side like so.
Step 9
Fill in your redstone.
Place your lava right here.
Step 10
Wait for the lava to turn all 4 redstone pieces to obsidian.
Step 11
Pick your lava back up for using later.
Step 12
Enjoy your obsidian.

still takes a friggin long time to mine
so
i have a way to make anything out of obsidian
imo Obsidian is one of the very best materials in the game. Before this, it took such a long time to make, that anything useful made out of it was more of a waste of time than the good it did.
But obsidian is impervious to explosions, and if you have a place you dont want people tunneling into, a 3 block thick wall around whatever it is usually deters griefers a good bit.

Confirming this still works with the 1.4 update. It seems notch hasnt caught wind of this. Yet.
This is way cool! Obsidian is a bitch to mine.
