How does rep work?

Hi guys, I was just wondering how a users reputation works. I see lots of people asking to give them rep if they helped but I can't work out how to do so.
(sorry I'm a noob)

Bottom corner of a post, click it and click add to reputation.

there is a star under a name, click it and click i approve, btw 100 POSTS!!

Basically, the more rep you have, the longer your e-peen, the better you can cover up and compensate for your inadequacies thanks to a false sense of confidence.
