Even if you do need to play in an overseas server, first make sure that your routing to it isn't bad already.
Sometimes your Internet Provider is already giving you a good route/path, and you are simply stuck with high ping due to the distance.
The only way a VPN would help is if your Internet Provider is giving a bad route in hops to the server, other than that a VPN would only increase your latency.
As for "gaming VPN"... there really isnt such a thing, its all simply about which provider gives the best routing to the endpoint server.
I've used Mudfish before, its like $3 per 6 months and it worked for me when one of the servers in my ISP route path was down.
For example:
Original ping to server was 30
ISP had routing issue which made me have 100 ping
Using mudfish let me select which route to use and brought me back down to 32 ping.
So if you are already close to the server, it will technically add latency, but if you are far away then you may not have good routing/pathing. Thats where VPN comes in handy.
Next: ExpressVPN. I personally used them, and it was really fast (they are known for speed), but unlike mudfish, can't control the specific routes for lowest ms ping. I even prefer expressvpn cuz of how much more simple it is, and it did help... just not as much, and the price difference.
Last: Hotspot Shield VPN. With their Catapult Protocol, its not as secure but if you just want speed that one is great too now. But it should not be used for sketchy stuff as they are not the most secure. But if its just for gaming, then they are one of the faster ones too.
There are plenty other VPN's many cheaper, but I get higher ms ping times with them. Try to avoid gimmicks like WTFast, haste, outfox, etc. They are overpriced garbage "gaming VPNs". Only VPN labeled for "gaming" I would try is mudfish mainly because you can check the entire server list for checks and create your own pathing that gives the most direct route. As I said though it's a lot more complicated and gui is weird.. its web based gui and a slight learning curve.
Tl;dr: Mudfish for "gaming vpn", ExpressVPN for speed/security, Hotspot shield VPN for speed only. (I recommend the first two more than the last).
