Why are people so desperate to make themselves feel good or different from how they normally feel? Are they depressed?

As biased as my opinion is from not having tried it myself, that is, without a doubt, absolutely disgusting.

I just don't understand any drugs in general. After having the notion of 'Drugs are bad' bashed into my brain by parents and years of schooling I subconsciously stereotype drug users and pass such hobbies off as not beneficial to partake in.
